A secondary school teacher, caught with over 12,000 sexually explicit images of children during a sudden police raid, dodged prison with a suspended sentence yesterday.
Science teacher Kenneth Ring, 26,(pictured) of Poynter Road, Enfield taught at Edmonton County school, but he quit in disgrace and his promising career is in tatters.
The first-time offender pleaded guilty to twelve sample charges of possessing indecent images of children on January 19, last year when officers from the Met’s Paedophile Unit executed a search warrant at his family’s home.
“You say you started this out of some form of perverted interest, you say you did not get any sexual satisfaction. I think you are lying,” Southwark Crown Court Judge John Price told Ring.
“How you can look at these images, including a three year-old girl in a sexual act, God only knows. It is so wicked and perverted and you are contributing to a perverted industry.”
Prosecutor Miss Usha Shergill told the court (pictured bottom) an online investigation into an internet forum which posted indecent images led officers to the house Ring shares with his parents.
Fifteen computer-related items were seized and five contained still and moving images, which Ring immediately confessed he was responsible for.
When quizzed at Edmonton Police Station the defendant denied gaining sexual gratification from the material and insisted he had never personally abused a child.
“He said he became obsessed by the images and viewed them for several years,” added Miss Shergill.
A total of 12,130 indecent still and moving images were found on various computer equipment ranging from the lowest to highest levels of indecency.
There were 217 at Level 5 – the most serious – including a girl aged under twelve years-old involved in sexual activity with an animal.
Simon Ray, defending, told the court: “Mr. Ring recognises this is not a victimless crime and it does create a market for more images.
“It was easy for Mr. Ring to delude himself because the abuse had already taken place and he was insulated from the material he was using.
“His remorse is heartfelt and genuine,” added Mr. Ray. “He has made efforts to obtain help and counselling, even before his arrest.
“He was a hardworking and dedicated teacher and that career is irretrievably ruined by his disgraceful behaviour.
“He will never work with children again.”
Judge Price sentenced Ring, his head bowed in shame, to twelve months imprisonment, suspended for two years, and ordered him to complete 200 hours community service work.
He was also ordered to attend thirty-five two-hour sessions with the community sex offenders group and pay £350 costs.
“My main aim is to protect the public and children,” added the Judge. “You did not directly interfere with children, but you encouraged those who do by subscribing to such sites.
“What can be done to stop you?”
Bespectacled Ring was made subject to an indefinite Sexual Offences Prevention Order, banning him from contacting children aged under sixteen via the Internet or any other electronic device.
He is also disqualified from unsupervised contact with children aged under sixteen without the consent of their parent or guardian.
Ring, who told Judge Price: “It will never happen again,” will sign the Sex Offenders Register for ten years.

I feel sorry for Mr.Ring,I believe that although what he did was incredibly wrong he probably couldn't help himself as I agree that it counts as some kind of mental condition. He was a great teacher for the 2-3 years that I had him teaching me, I don't think i've ever had a better chemistry teacher.He was always a little inappropriate with his jokes but none of us could have guessed this.
I am totally digusted by this, my daughter found it through a friend and I have posted it on my facebook wall. My son was taught by him a few years ago, I am shocked that the school has not let parents or children aware of this, was they so stupid to think this stort would not come to light, you would think that Edmonton County School would have prepared parents for something like this coming to light. Mr Ring was removed from teaching. Until his case had been heard it would have been inappropriate to have informed parents and pupils, what would it have achieved? Rumors have been circulating since he stopped teaching, so if any student had issues with him they could have spoken to a member of staff.
My children were taught by him and thought he was a very good teacher. It is disgusting what he has done, and it has ruined his career. I just hope he can get the help he obviously needs.

Those photographers were there for another case, nobody knew anything about Ring.
I chanced upon the case because I routinely cover the courts.
I did ask one snapper to get Ring as he exited, but they did not want to wait, hence no image of the defendant.
In this current climate, and considering that the courts have been instructed to throw the book at teachers found guilty of such crimes...What does it say that no custodial sentence was handed down.
1. That no actual person was involved, no child injured, no photo redistributed.
2. That the guilty party was not deemed to be a danger to the public, because believe me, if he was he would be in a cell right now.
3. The court believed that there was no chance of re-offending.
No i don't know this case, or this individual, however over 15 years of law enforcement experience tells me that this guy was small fry. It is not the function of this website to judge a person or hand out a sentence, that is the job of the courts. There is probably a good reason that the local paper turned this down.
What Mr Ring did was wrong, and I’m not trying to defend him. I’m sure the Editor will correct me if I am wrong, but Mr Ring was charged with possession only?
So that means he has not spread, sent or shared any images, or he would have been charged with “distribution”. He did not take, or make any pictures himself, or he would have been charged with “production/making”. He did not ask or pay anyone to produce images, or he would have been charged with “inciting/commissioning”. And perhaps most relevant, he hasn’t actually done anything to a child, or he would have been charged with “sexual activity with a child”. In what seems to have been a year long investigation, he was charged with downloading some files.
Was this wrong? Yes, very. He obviously needs help. I am not trying to defend what he has done. However, he hasn’t been at the school for a year. He will never work with children again (and from the comments here, it seems he was a good teacher). He has a criminal record…I think perhaps justice has been done without the formation of a Lynch mob.
As for the school, it would have been inappropriate to mention anything before the hearing. And what he was charged with doesn’t appear to have happen in school. If there was even the slightest hint that anyone from the school was involved, the police would have been in there questioning, from what I gather here, that hasn’t happened?
As I said, what he has done is wrong. But a little logic in realising the difference between looking at some pictures, and DOING what was in the pictures might be useful. To use an example is someone who watches slash’um up film a psychopath? (Not equating the 2, just using as an example).

The witch-hunt being encouraged on this blog is the very reason why so many people that make mistakes like this get driven underground and the police lose track of them…which, ironically is actually against the public interest…be sensible.
Im am not saying that the school should have told us a year ago, innocent untill proven guilty .. definatley .. but immediatley after seizing his computer and searcing the hard drive it would have been obvious what he had been doing. The school would have been aware of his court date and then should have a sent a letter out accordingly and not let students and parents find out somewhere else.

His families address and his picture should never have been put in this article as it poses a danger to his family and i personally think they are suffering enough without a lynch mob forming. Just some points for the ill-educated people who are posting comments on this blog...
1. It's not schools who decide on holding back on things like this. It's the Local Education Authority, which I assume in this case is Enfield. If parents wish to vent their anger, it should be at them, not at the school.
2. There is still a thing in this country which is called law. People are innocent until proven guilty. It would be wrong for anyone to publicise details of a case before a person has been found guilty, and even then, if the case had nothing to do with the school, which it appears it doesn't, the school does not need to say anything.
3. The publishing of the man's address is thoroughly sickening. Unless the whole family who live with him were involved in this, how dare anyone make their lives any more difficult than it must already be?

What this man has done is wrong. He has been caught, tried, and sentenced by the courts. The hysteria and panic being fostered here cannot possibly lead to any good.
So what if he has changed his appearance slightly. The change cannot be that drastic, as you clearly identified him.
It would be a mistake to make it even easier to find and persecute this man and his family. It is likely this somewhat over-reaction is precisely why the papers refused to run the story to begin with.
Remember, what he did was wrong, but he has not harmed anyone at the school, or indeed anyone reading and commenting upon this blog. Not one comment here has tried to defend his actions...they are indefensible. Those accused of 'defending' him are simply trying to interject some reason and restraint into all the scare-mongering and needless panic.

Mr. Ring was my science teacher, a good teacher, if not a bit weird. Then he left the school suddenly, and we were without a teacher - our education suffered.
The teachers refused to tell us why he left, but there were plently of rumours flying around.

Sometime ago I remember Ring saying over a meal, "grab your dick and double click." Though he was referring to a West End show at the time, I find it very eery now that this has come to light. He was introduced to me as "a very, very nice guy", though time and again I have seen that he has done more to secure his "good guy" image than to substantiate it. When he caused an injury to another student in a martial arts session, he didn't offer to take the injured to hospital, but lowered his head, hid behind a bunch of students. The instructor asked for volunteers, and NO ONE DID. Not even Ring. Ring stayed to the end of that session to have photos taken with the grading candidates, thus securing his legacy at the expense of the one injured by him by leaving that student who he had hurt, in pain. Ring was only demonstrating at the time and he was not even a candidate. Why was he even in the pictures? Incidents like these speak loud volumes.

When I first found out about this in April, things started to click. Initially I thought he was mentally damaged due to 'bullying' but when I saw psychological traits which he projected and what I had observed/experienced made me realise he was not worth my time. I started to ignore his existence while training and tried my best to avoid sparring with him. Once he had kicked my knee when I had to spar against him and I was unable to spar properly. It was against the rules to kick below the belt but his delusions and whatever else made him feel like he was able to do it and get away with it.
Since knowing that he had an obsession with child pornography, I figured his insecurities were being projected towards me because I couldn't give a Darwin's monkey about a person's delusions. I'm more objective and deal with facts and evidence, rather than what he 'feels and believes'.
I can cause some decent damage if I used my advantages and I decided to train somewhere else just to be sure that I was training properly because he took most of the space. He has no respect for the history, culture and philosophy of martial arts. He is just an oversized 'black belt' who can only use brute force and criticise other people's training and techniques.
After finding out about this article, I chucked everything concerning that club in a bonfire, and I have no regrets in making such a decision because he contaminated the environment where I was training. I am also glad I left the place when I did although I should have listened to my gut instinct and left when he started projecting his insecurities or at least done something to shatter his delusional beliefs.

Justice has not been served. Had Ring been of another ethnical background he would have been given a custodial sentence right away. Perhaps a brother in the US military had been of some leverage? Who knows.
According to this case Ring had been interested in child porn for "several years". Whether or not Ring was telling the truth is anyone's guess. However, how many years is "several" years? About 3-5 years, perhaps?

You know who else migt maybe potentially possibly have gone on to rape children? Everyone. From what the pupils have said it seems he was clearly a good man and a good teacher. You should feel lucky to have had a decent teacher like him tutor your kids. The chances of him actually molesting a child are as low as any other teacher at that school. Being curious about things is human, and he was curious about child porn as he admits. He was only putting himself at risk, not his students.

As for the School, I see no issue with them not announcing this. It was not a school issue. What WAS wrong that they actually LIED about it to students. Simply not telling the truth is one thing, hiding it is another.

Being curious is one thing. Obsession is another, the fact that he had more than 12,000 images, 217 at level 5 inc one under age bestiality, if he couldnt control himself with images, then what about in real life with access to underage children. The desires and intent of an individual are not known, no one is psychic. The probability of another 'teacher' having those desires in that school, is mere conjecture. How many of his very close and personal karate or taekwondo friends or 'masters' knew or were involved about his exploitative (masturbating-happy ending) interest in child pornography that also included child penetration with an animal? Any guesses to how many of his 'associations' would deny/hide any knowledge or of being involved in Ring's grotesque behaviour? That master instructor and the others who were close friends with Ring, have associated with (now a 'known') paedophile, and only they know how far they participated in Ring's nasty obsession.
I can't say he 'hid' his fetish very well because he got tracked down.
