Actress Rula Lenska was banned for drink-driving today after celebratory lunchtime vodka with her Polish builders put her over the limit, causing her to flip her car, while driving her three year-old grandson home.
The 68 year-old former Eastenders star, who that afternoon toasted the completion of a garden fence, crashed her car into a parked vehicle and was dragged out via the boot, along with the child, by worried passers-by.
Lenska, of Hazledene Road, Chiswick was arrested when breath-tested thirty minutes after the crash, which left her blue Kia on its side.
She pleaded guilty to driving the 1.6 litre diesel, with excess alcohol in her breath, on February 22 in Hospital Bridge Road, Twickenham and was disqualified for 16 months, fined £410, with £85 costs and ordered to pay a £41 victim surcharge.
Lenska, born Countess Roza Lubienska and descended from Polish aristocracy, had 47 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath - the legal limit is 35.
She appeared at Wimbledon Magistrates Court and did not face any charge in relation to the child - the son of her daughter Lara, 26, from her first marriage in the 1970's to actor Brian Deacon.
In a statement to police she said: "All of a sudden something flashed up on the dashboard about tyre pressure and I heard a noise of something clicking.
"All of a sudden the car turned on its side. I was in shock and worried about my grandson.
"The airbags did not engage. I was terrified and in shock.
"I drank some alcohol at lunchtime, but it was only a shot of vodka. If I had been unfit there is no way I would have driven with my grandson in the car.
"When I got out of the car I was understandably unsteady on my feet, having just come out of an overturned car.
"I think anybody in a similar situation would have been unsteady on their feet.
"I remain very upset by the whole situation and feel very upset about putting my grandson, daughter and her husband through this whole ordeal.
"I am on medication and fear this my have caused some problem with me."
Her lawyer miss Seema Parikh told the court: "The irony is if she had waited a couple of hours or eaten something she would not be in this situation.
"She spends time with her cherished grandson and her daughter and on this day they went to a workshop in the local church and had high tea. She cherishes these moments."
Unfortunately earlier that day Lenska had opened a bottle of vodka at home. "She toasted the completion of her garden fence with her Polish builders."
Because her daughter had to take her cat to a vet Lenska was asked to drive her grandson to his Teddington home.
"She agreed and set off in the car, she felt normal and did not feel incapable of looking after the child or driving.
"Had she known she was over the limit she would not had risked her grandson's life. She thinks about this on a daily basis, causing huge remorse and regret.
"The whole event has had a crushing effect. The thought of her grandson dying in the car is too much to bear."
Earlier prosecutor Miss Mary Atere said it was just after 7pm when Lenska, whose only previous offence was speeding two years ago, struck the parked and unattended vehicle.
The locals who came to her and her grandson's aid detected a smell of alcohol on her breath and called the police.
Magistrate Miss Bukky Okunade told Lenska, who was dressed in a black trouser suit with a green top and indicated she could not hear proceedings from behind the secure glass-panelled dock: "This has been aggravated by causing an accident.
"You had a passenger, your three year-old grandson and have an accident when colliding with a parked vehicle, causing your vehicle to overturn."
Because of these aggravating features the magistrates increased the ban by two months.
She was married to Minder star Dennis Waterman between 1987 and 1998 until like her first marriage that also ended in divorce.
Lenska is also known for a memorable appearance alongside then-MP George Galloway in 2006's Celebrity Big Brother in which he played the role of a cat lapping-up imaginary milk from her cupped hands.
Following her arrest she said on twitter: 'I feel ashamed and disgusted with myself, there is no excuse.
"I just thank my guardian angels that were are both totally unharmed."
Witnesses to the crash described Lenska, who until 2011 appeared in Coronation Street as Claudia Colby, as being very shaken.
Retail manager Steph Pentreath, 26, ran out of her home when she heard the crash. "I heard a bang first of all and I came running out and saw the car on its side.
"It had clipped a car that was parked on the side of the road and flipped over onto its side.
"We were trying to get the doors open, but they were locked. We managed to get the boot open.
"There was a boy aged three to four in there. He was pretty terrified.
"We tried to get him out of the boot. then she ended up coming out first of the boot.
"She was behind the bushes by my house. She was being breathalysed and then they arrested her."
Paul Mayhew, 54, was one of approximately fifteen people who tried to help. "It took quite a long time to get the woman calm.
"There was a child in a car seat in the back. The woman was very shaky. The child was fine."
A parked car damaged in the collision belonged to the family of 23 year-old Muneeb Ali Khan.
Lenska has appeared in various television shows since the seventies including Rock Follies; Take a Letter Mr. Jones; To the Manor Born; Doctor Who; Minder; Cludeo and One Foot in the Grave.

Evangelical Pastor Spanked Female Followers Bottoms To Instill "Spiritual Discipline"
A "charismatic and dynamic" evangelical pastor administered "spiritual discipline" by spanking female members of his congregation's bare bottoms with his hand, a jury have been told.
The spankings, which were also dished-out to children, were to satisfy 73 year-old self-styled Reverend Howard Curtis's "desire for power and sexual satisfaction," Croydon Crown Court heard.
The father-of-three, of Bloxworth Close, Wallington ran the Coulsdon Christian Fellowship (CCF) as a cult, said prosecutor Mr. Toby Fitzgerald.
He ordered one woman to strip naked before putting her over his knee to slap, continuing the beating when she collapsed to the floor - with one of the dozen or so sessions in front of her husband.
Curtis has pleaded not guilty to two sample counts of sexually assaulting her between January 1, 2009 and July 15, 2013 and one count of assault by digital penetration.
He introduced the student nurse to his version of "Christian domestic discipline" - following Bible teachings of keeping women in their place.
"She trusted him completely as a man of God," said Mr. Fitzgerald, explaining the first disciplining - for untidiness - occurred in the defendant's office at the church.
"She pulled down her trousers and underwear and lay across his lap. He hit her hard about twelve times until she ended up on the floor.
"She'd become, in effect, a rag doll in the defendant's hands."
Subsequent discipline sessions were for "lacking femininity" and having a "frigid spirit," the jury were told.
"The defendant told her to strip completely naked and she lay across his lap and he slapped her.
"He also smacked her not only on her bottom, but between her legs for not recognising her femininity."
Curtis also took naked pictures of her on his mobile phone and fondled her between her legs, once inserting a finger, the jury were told.
When arrested he did not deny the spankings, insisting they were consensual.
Another woman was told it was "God's will" she be punished and she agreed to his form of discipline, which took place in another follower's house, next-door to the Chipstead Valley Road church.
"She leaned over a bannister in the hallway and took her trousers and knickers down so he could spank her bare bottom.
"She was told it was important not to tell him when to stop, he would decide when it was time to stop and he continued to beat her forcefully.
"There were twenty to thirty strikes with his bare hand and she felt it was going on forever and was crying. She was black and blue and told all these actions were in God's name."
Curtis has pleaded not guilty to two counts of sexual assault against the woman between January 1, 2007 and December 31, 2009.
He also denies one count of child cruelty between March 1, 2007 and February 28, 2008 in relation to the woman's nine year-old daughter.
She was put over his knee and beaten "very hard" until she started crying, explained Mr. Fitzgerald.
A third woman, a 51 year-old mum-of-three, received so-called "healing sessions" from Curtis, who claimed her could help her come to terms with historic sexual abuse.
"She feels she was almost put into a hypnotic trance by the defendant, who quite deliberately preyed on the fact she had been abused to get her to relive it while he performed the acts her abuser did.
"Her reactions was often to scream and try to fight him off, but the defendant said this told him she needed more healing, allowing him to commit more abuse.
"The sessions were so physical and violent her clothes would be ripped and the defendant was so hot and sweaty he'd remove the top half of his clothing."
She was even attacked by Curtis with the help of other worshippers in the family room of a hospital her daughter was being treated at for a life-threatening illness.
"The defendant pinned her down to the bed and got on top of her while holding the Bible.
"Others had gone up there, supposedly to pray, and they assisted in pinning her down.
"The angrier she got the more the defendant said it was the evil spirit coming out."
Curtis denies two counts of indecently assaulting her between August 1, 1991 and April 1, 1996.
He also denies two counts of child cruelty between January 29, 2004 and January 28, 2006 in relation to a young boy, aged approximately eight years-old he spanked "very hard" up to five times.
Curtis has also pleaded not guilty to causing actual bodily harm to a thirteen year-old girl he spanked a dozen times with a slipper for disobedience until she was "black and blue" some time between January 4, 1969 and January 3, 1971.
He denies another child cruelty charge relating to a worshipper's baby, whose bottom he is accused of pinching, some time between January 1, 1986 and January 3, 1989.
Curtis was ordained in 1988 under the umbrella of the Elim Pentecostal church.
"He presented himself as an inspirational man of God," said Mr. Fitzgerald. "The Crown say the church was run for this defendant and he cloaked himself in the trappings of a religious leader.
"In reality he was nothing of the sort. He deceived his congregation, including children.
"He said he was going to cast out evil spirits from people and that discipline had to be administered by striking bare flesh with the bare hand."
The trial is expected to last four weeks.

Care Agency Couple Convicted Of Running Multi-Million Pound Firm That "Exploited" Illegal Workers
A couple who ran a multi-million pound care agency, which employed "exploited" illegal workers who flouted and overstayed their visas, were convicted of breaching immigration law yesterday.
The Mauritian-born husband and wife team had a lucrative contract with Sutton Council that alone was worth £500,000 to their illegal operation and in just three years their bank account was swelled by payments totalling £2.5m.
Police chief's daughter Saraspedy Caussyram, 54, and her husband, nurse Mahendrasing Caussyram, 51, of Burdon Lane, Sutton were the bosses of CareFirst 24 Limited, which provided round the clock healthcare to the sick, disabled and elderly.
Prosecutor Mr. Andrew Evans told the Croydon Crown Court jury: "Their company employed overseas workers as self-employed contractors who worked as nurses and carers in order to service the company's lucrative private and public sector contracts.
"A significant number of these workers were working illegally beyond the terms and conditions of the visas that permitted them entry to the UK.
"The Caussyram's were responsible for ensuring those working under their remit were doing so legally. Instead they facilitated illegal working practises by continuing to allow them to work once their visas had expired"
Mrs Caussyram, a former midwife oversaw domestic care and Mr. Caussyram the nursing side of the business.
They were arrested after a Home Office investigation, which discovered the London Borough of Sutton paid their company half a million pounds for care provision between June 1, 2007 and January 13, 2013.
The company's annual profits were between £123,585 and £393,793 and was run day-to-day with the assistance of Mauritian and Filipino managers.
"The rates of pay were not very good nor were the hours in particular instances. Some workers were live-in carers working twenty-four hours per day seven days a week," added Mr. Evans.
"There was a significant mark up in the rates charged to public sector clients when compared to the rates paid to carers"
Mr. Caussyram was described as "forceful" when insisting to his managers the work was lawful.
The investigation found 54 carers - mostly Filipino's - under CareFirst 24 were overseas nationals subject to visas and were working illegally either overstaying or not permitted to work a self-employed.
None of them paid tax or National Insurance contributions.
"The fact that tax was not paid on earnings was something foreseeable by the defendants as a consequence of the arrangements they put in place for their illegal workers," added Mr. Evans.
CareFirst 24 provided services for Woking and Walton hospitals in Surrey, Surrey Primary Care Trust and Surrey County Council as well as Merton and Sutton councils.
"If local authorities had known that CareFirst 24 was providing services via carers not working lawfully in the UK…..those services would have been terminated and no further payment made."
The company was registered with regulator The Care Quality Commission, but the organisation was not told workers were all self-employed.
After their arrests the couple told investigators it was up to the company's management team to check the immigration status of the workers.
"There is clear compelling evidence that CareFirst 24 was engaging migrant workers on a self-employed basis in breach of their visas and or after their visas had expired.
"Equally clear is that the directors of CareFirst 24 undertook an active role in the recruitment of such workers and in controlling the company's position as regards the legality of their working on its behalf.
"CareFirst 24 provided Mr. and Mrs Caussyram with a significant income and it may be that for the exploitation of these overseas workers, who often worked long hours and were paid considerably less than the rates at which the services were charged, their income would not have been so great."
The couple were both convicted unanimously by the jury of facilitating breaches of immigration law between January 1, 2011 and January 6, 2013 by engaging visa overstayers to work in the UK.
Mr. Caussyram alone was convicted of breaching immigration law between the same dates by engaging self-employed workers contrary to their visa restrictions.
Their accountant, Omid Nabbey, 37, of Hartley Down, Purley - boss of Apple Payroll Solutions - who the prosecution claimed assisted the couple laundering their profits - was acquitted halfway through the trial.
The couple were bailed until April 8 for sentencing and Judge Peter Gower QC told them: "I want to make absolutely clear I have not determined the type of sentence I have to impose.
"It may be immediate custody for one or both of you or it may not."
There is no suggestion of sub-standard care provided by their staff.

Legendary 60's Fashion Photographer Sentenced For Groping Women
A sixties photographer who carried around his portfolio of work - which included an iconic picture of the model Twiggy - to help him sexually assault women, has been placed on probation.
He was placed on a two-year supervision order when he was sentenced at Isleworth Crown Court.
He claimed to miss "skin on skin" contact and touched them both over and under their clothing, rubbing their breasts. legs, thighs, backs, arms and hair.
He had been ruled unfit to enter a plea to eight counts of sexual assault allegedly committed between February 1, 2013 and June 18, this year.
The jury heard Lategan, of Grosvenor Park, Camberwell has "evolving dementia" and they had to decide if the offences occurred.
Two of his photographic portraits of Twiggy hang in the Victoria & Albert Museum and he has photographed among others HRH Princess Anne, Paul and Linda McCartney, Iman, Germaine Greer, Margaret Thatcher and Salman Rushdie.
Prosecutor Miss Teresa Hay told the jury four of the eight women reported Lategan, whose c.v. includes front pages of fashion magazines Vogue and Harpers Bazaar, after reading press reports of sexual allegations against him.
The first woman was walking to Virgin Active, Fulham Road when she smiled at fellow gym member Lategan. "He grabbed both her arms and gave her a firm kiss on both cheeks."
The second woman, 44, was on a 211 bus in Fulham when Lategan began showing-off his portfolio. "He was touching and stroking her forearm and said: 'It's so lovely to be able to touch someone.
"He asked if he could hug her, but she felt the embrace was too firm and lasted too long and he swiped his hand over her breasts," explained Miss Hay.
Referring to his erect penis Lategan told her: "Look what you've done to me."
The third woman, an artist, was persuaded by Lategan to leave Cafe Nero and go to her flat in Redcliffe Square, West Brompton to take photos for a project.
"He asked her to recline on her sofa and pose and open her legs wider. He sat newt to her and started rubbing her thigh and put his hand on her breasts over her clothing."
The fourth woman was approached on a 211 bus. "He put his hand inside the arm of her coat. He said: 'I do miss skin on skin.'
"He put his hand on her leg under her trousers and also stroked her hair and head."
He gave most of the women his business card, which allowed police to easily trace him, and the fifth woman was also approached on 211 bus and shown his portfolio of work.
"He touched the hem of her dress and moved his hand up her leg to her thigh."
The sixth woman was an a route 68 bus. "He showed her pictures of Twiggy and other photos from his portfolio and ran his hand down her hair.
"He followed her off the bus and put his hand up her back under her clothing and said: 'I'm sorry, my wife died. Can I have a hug?'
"The seventh woman, a former art student he gave an autographed picture of Twiggy to, was on a 211 bus in the evening.
"He put his hand up the back of her top and stroked her skin," explained Miss Hay. "He asked her if he could kiss her."
The final woman was on a bus travelling towards Camberwell. "He told her about his now legendary portraits of Twiggy and she used her phone to look him up on the internet.
"Mr. Lategan touched her thighs over her jeans and said: 'At the gym they're into tits, but I'm into legs.'
Legendary fashion and style photographer Barry Lategan, 81, approached his victims mainly on buses, engaged them in conversation about his pictures of the rich and famous and groped them.
"He slid his hand between her legs, up her thighs and towards her groin."

Civil Servant's £280K Housing Benefit Swindle
A housing benefit officer with the London Borough of Ealing, who reopened thirty-four dormant claims and paid £280,000 of taxpayers money into his own bank accounts, has received an absolute discharge.
Even after civil servant Mark Hypolite, 36, who has mental health issues, was caught and banned from his office he sneaked back in and logged-on to a council computer and continued the fraud.
Hypolite, of 1 Phipps House, Shepherd's Bush will not have to pay any compensation even though over £180,000 is still missing.
An Isleworth Crown Court jury found proved nine sample counts of dishonestly making false representations between April 12, 2010 and November 16, 2011.
Hypolite changed his name by deed poll to open bank accounts under different identities and immediately withdrew the payments in cash.
The council have recovered £97,000, but do not know what has happened to the remainder or what Hypolite spent the money on.
The defendant was employed at Perceval House, Uxbridge Road from 2007 and was identified by colleagues who suspected suspicious activity, resulting in him becoming the target of an investigation by the audit department.
The thirty-four claims were reopened without the original claimants' knowledge and paid into three different bank accounts, one of which was in the name of Hypolite's mother's second husband.
Prosecutor Mr. Mark Tomassi told the jury: "He was employed by the council and was not entitled to the monies paid out. It was pure fraud from first to last.
"The frauds committed by Mr. Hypolite are complicated, sophisticated, persistent and consistent and a very large sum of money has been wrongly diverted.
"This all points to a sophisticated, calculated successful fraud.
"He was suspended and told not to enter the premises and knew he was not welcome within the council offices, but was seen there again a few days later."

Four Months In Shade For Luxury Sunglasses Thief
A persistent thief - with an eye for expensive designer sunglasses - has received four months for stealing 38 pairs of Bvlgari's, worth £11,130, in ten raids on the same Kensington store during a year-long shoplifting spree.
Christopher Blackwood, 28, targeted Sunglasses Hut on Kensington High Street, but also pinched 6 pairs of Prada's, worth £1500, and 7 pairs of Emporio Armani, worth £1,000 from neighbouring David Clulow opticians.
He previously pleaded guilty at Hammersmith Magistrates Court to twelve counts of theft and was remanded in custody for sentencing at Isleworth Crown Court last Tuesday.
The court heard drug-addict Blackwood, currently serving 16 months imprisonment for stealing a mobile phone, committed the thefts between May 16, 2014 and May 15, last year.
All but two of the thefts were caught on CCTV, but Blackwood escaped with the sunglasses every time and none of the pairs were ever recovered.
Deputy District Judge Kevin Gladwell told him: "These were high-value items stolen over a long period of time. You targeted one particular store in question."

Soldier Denies Kidnapping Ex Who Finished With Him
A soldier kidnapped his ex-girlfriend and threatened to kill her and himself when she dumped him for a new man during his tour of duty to the Middle East, a court heard on Monday.
Alvon Montgomery Tobias, 32, a Royal Engineer, based at Carver Barracks, Wimbish, Essex was hiding in bushes when the single-mum left her Twickenham flat.
She told the Kingston-upon-Thames Crown Court jury he dragged her to his Mini Clubman car, pinned her to the passenger seat and refused to let her out.
Tobias, from Ealing, has pleaded not guilty to kidnapping Monika Mikalak in Valley Mews on April 7, last year.
"There were some text messages from him that day. He said he wanted to talk to me, but I realised he was not the right person."
"I was leaving for work at 9.15pm to get the bus to West Middlesex Hospital and when I opened my front door I realised he was hiding by the bushes.
"I told him I had to go to work and I did not want to see him or have anything to do with him.
"He dragged me to his car, he was holding my arms, and said he wanted me to be a part of his life and stuff like that.
"I was shouting and screaming at him to let me go.
"He forced me to get into the car and pushed me into the passenger side and sat on me so I could not move.
"Then closed the door and moved to the driver's seat and started driving like crazy.
"He said he would kill me and kill himself. I was scared.
"When he stopped at the traffic lights I tried to get out, but he shut the door on my leg, causing bruising."
After driving around west London for forty minutes six-foot three Tobias dropped her off at work.
The couple met on website Badoo and exchanged intimate naked images of themselves before meeting-up.
She agreed they had a "passionate and intense" sexual relationship and they had kissed the day before the incident, despite her having a new man.
They had known each other for nearly a year when Ms Mikalak told Tobias she'd met someone else while he was serving in Jordan for five weeks.
Her new boyfriend phoned her while she was in the car prompting the defendant to snatch her mobile and shout: "She's with me!"
She denied inventing the kidnap story out of "anger" towards Tobias for revealing himself to her new boyfriend.
Prosecutor Mr. David Brock told the jury Tobias was questioned by police on May 11.
"He accepted the relationship had broken down and that he did meet her that day, but said she got into the car without force and he dropped her off at work."
