Dodgy Driving Traps Nigerian Overstayer

A Nigerian overstayter, who remained undetected in the UK for twenty-four years, was finally caught after motorway cops found a forged driving licence in his pocket when he was stopped on the M1.

Paul Onifade, 48, was jailed for three months at Wood Green Crown Court (pictured) yesterday and now it is up to the Home Office whether they wish to deport him.

He pleaded guilty to being in possession of a false identity document, namely a UK driving licence, on February 9, 2007 in north London.

Onifade skipped police bail and failed to return to the station while checks into the bogus licence were made, but was caught again on October 16 this year when police pulled him over for erratically driving his van.

Charges of driving without insurance and not in accordance with a driving licence were dropped under the six-month time limit.

Onifade was originally arrested four years ago because he was driving very slowly one Sunday morning down the M1 motorway.

When searched officers found the forged driving licence, which bore the defendant's name and photograph.

Onifade's lawyer told the court: "His presence has not had a negative impact on the society around him."

The defendant was also disqualified from driving for twelve months.
