Neighbour Guilty Of Harassment After Blocking Unlawful Demolition Of Next-Door's Mega Development Boundary Wall

Charged: Robin Christie
The neighbour of a City lawyer and his businesswoman wife has been convicted of harassment after continually spoiling their unlawful plans to create a vehicle entrance to their grand development via his quiet cul-de-sac.

Business consultant Robin Christie, 65, padlocked his bike to a makeshift gate to stop access, blocked the erection of fencing and said the wife: “ploughed on like an angry Zimbabwean land grabber.”

Solicitor Samuel Tempest Brooks, 43, and his company director wife Julia Stafford, 43, paid £850,000 for the Edwardian former water works within the Hampton Village Conservation Area, south-west London.

They secured council planning permission on appeal - despite Christie’s objections - for a huge subterranean development and two-storey extension at the unoccupied detached property, transforming it into a multi-million pound des res.

Fellow Housing Association residents of Hill House Drive also objected to the plans and the couple’s determination to demolish a boundary wall without council planning permission to create gated access through the residents’ close, costing parking spaces.

The residents were eventually victorious and works ground to a halt, with the development and the power couple’s marriage coming to an end and the property now back on the market for £999,950.

However, at Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court last week a judge found Christie’s behaviour was “arrogant and intimidating,” and he was found guilty of harassing Julia between July 1 and September 28, 2024 and was bailed for probation reports.

Christie even summonsed the council leader of Richmond-upon-Thames, Gareth Roberts, to confirm the couple, particularly project manager Julia, were incorrect in trying to force through the gated access.

“The wall was in the conservation area and she had no permission to demolish this wall,” he told the two-day trial. “She believed it was implicit she could demolish the wall, but that was not the case.

“She was agitated and angry and would stress her opinion that she was correct. It would have been a breach of planning if she demolished the wall.”

The residents once even rushed to block the wall with their cars when a large digger truck and works crew, hired by the couple, arrived in their cul-de-sac to demolish it.

Tempers boiled on July 5, 2024 when Julia began erecting security fencing on the residents’ side of the dividing brick wall, claiming her land extended into Hill House Drive.

She began digging up a border of plants with her tree surgeon when Christie and a female neighbour approached.

“They began objecting to me erecting fencing and they were also verbally abusive. They told me I didn’t have permission and that I was causing problems and being a nuisance,” Julia told the trial.

“Robin Christie was inciting it. He was the instigator behind it and representing himself as some sort of legal authority and that he knew what he was talking about.

“He was falsely claiming that I didn’t own the land and had no right to erect the fencing and he followed me through a side gate onto the land I physically own.

Julia Stafford & Samuel Brooks

“There were a lot of people verbally abusing me and I escaped the situation and removed myself to have some breathing space.

“The fencing was to protect people from the construction site and prevent them walking into an unsafe area.

“He was in my face and refusing to leave. I felt very threatened, violated and exposed and I kept being accused of criminal damage.”

She complained Christie followed her onto her property and the court viewed footage she recorded shouting: “Get off my land!”

In her judgement Deputy District Judge Patricia Evans said of Christie: “He took exception to their planning permission and where she placed the fence.

“His behaviour was arrogant and intimidating when marching into her garden.”

Julia added: “I am in full panic mode by now. Being followed onto my land is very threatening to me.

“When I went back to the fence it had been taken down. I put it back up and they took it down again.”

After the couple returned from a Greek family holiday Julia again began erecting the fencing on July 22.

“Robin Christie kept getting in my way, between the wall and the fence. He wanted to make it look like I was putting him in physical danger so it could be videoed as if I was assaulting him.”

A section of fence fell crashing to the ground as neighbours gathered around recording the dispute.

“Robin Christie was pushing it down as much as he could and I could not hold on anymore and I recall him ramming the fence into my legs.

“When the police came I told them I had been hurt. I had a cut on my foot and hand and the next day my legs were covered in bruises.

Christie's home (top) & wall (bottom)

“I was shocked and disgusted that nobody came to help me and the police told me if I reinstated the fence they would arrest me for breach of the peace.”

Describing Christie’s behaviour during this incident, Judge Evans said “He can be seen pushing against the complainant and in the scuffle her hands and legs were hurt.

“Getting into a tussle over fencing Mr Christie was completely losing perspective and behaving in a high-handed manner.”

While the couple were in Greece with their young son and daughter Christie sent a letter to leading City firm McFarlanes, where Mr Brooks was a partner, complaining about his behaviour.

“It was intended as a threat to coerce me to do what he wanted,” the solicitor told the court. “It was absurd faux legalise.”

Christie made references to the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) and Mr Brooks’ wife taking him down into “gutter-like behaviour.”

“It was intended to damage my career and cause the loss of all my income,” added Mr Brooks, now a partner at another City firm. “I thought it was hysterical nonsense.

“The gist was that my actions at the site implicated me in criminal damage and wider poor behaviour that made me liable to SRA sanction in the defendant’s view. The contents were utter bilge.”

Judge Evans ruled: “There is nothing conciliatory in the letter. The tone is unpleasant and it also increased Ms Stafford’s anxiety and she said in evidence she felt she was suffering PTSD.”

Julia once told husband Samuel to bring their title deeds to the site to convince the residents and police, but Christie disputed their accuracy, the court heard.

“The police were happy and in agreement, but Robin Christie kept insisting the title deeds were not exact to confuse the officers and convince the residents he was right,” said the Imperial College environmental technology graduate.

Julia also put together a makeshift gate out of two fence panels and padlocked it, but Christie then attached his bike, plus locks of his own to prevent her getting through.

This prompted tit-for-tat reprisals with Julia securing Christie’s bike to the fence with her own lock, culminating in her using a metal cutter and borrowed axle grinder to cut out the whole section.

“His bike with four locks attached to the fence barricaded me out of the property. It prevented me from opening it and accessing the side path to my house.

“Everyday I was verbally abused and it was like living in a cage. I was accosted by Robin Christie and two women telling me if I removed the locks it was criminal damage.

“I realised I had a cage built around me and that was the most traumatic day.

“I burst into tears and called the police. I did not know what to do and it was the most dehumanising experience to be in a cage treated like an animal.

“I’m pretty sure I had a panic attack. This was supposed to be a safe family home, but I was under constant threat from Robin Christie.”

She received a fixed penalty fine from the Met Police for cutting through one of Christie’s wire bike locks.

“Placing the bike and multiple locks is an act of harassment. Putting a lock on someone’s property and then watching them so he and the community can get their own way,” said Judge Evans.

“He was so busy championing the cause of the neighbours he lost perspective and pursued with increasing determination.”

Julia added: “I developed PTSD and became hyper-vigilant. I had insomnia and was terrified of arrest and hated all cameras and photos and became very secluded from friends and family.

“The fact I couldn’t have a safe family home made me ashamed that I couldn’t protect my family from another man trying to control.

“My son watched his mother be attacked and threatened with arrest, my daughter was afraid and the family dog was terrified. Myself and my husband struggled to find a way to get people to help us.

“He (Christie) is obsessed with me and the harassment started years before. He objected to our planning application and was fixated on me and the property.”

Christie told the trial: “I grew into becoming the spokesperson for the residents. I was the calmest head and sought to seek solutions and had no personal issue with Ms Stafford.

“This was a community trying to overcome an issue with someone difficult to deal with.

“Ms Stafford was hacking away at the plants quite aggressively and was quite rude and abusive to people standing there, accusing them of bad things.

“The residents had looked after that area and paid for its maintenance, but Ms Stafford was in an aggressive mood and did not want to hear sense.

“She was walking up and down muttering something like ‘little stupid people’ and the fence was later moved during a storm because it was dangerous.

“The letter I sent to her husband was not threatening. I was asking him to be accountable as a solicitor and human being because we had to come to some solution.

“They had grabbed land and taken possession of land.

“I did not push the fence into her, I was trying to stabilise it and she banged the fence into me. The police then picked up the fence and threw it back over her wall.

“She came back an hour later and reinstated the side gate, which she called a cage when giving evidence. She’s put the fence on land she does not own.

“I put a padlock around it and put a bike on the gate and locked it. I wanted to neutralise the gate,” Christie explained. “There was no harassment, there was no reason to put this fence up on our side of the boundary wall.

“The fence was eight feet into our land. This was a trespass.”

First-time offender Christie will be sentenced next month.

Gone In 24 Hours: Train Station Thief Behind Bars

An opportunist thief, who prowled St. Pancras station to swipe a rucksack, has been jailed twenty-four hours after being caught red-handed.

Hossein Rabah, 34, of Hackney, east London, was arrested at the station on the evening of January 4 by British Transport Police (BTP) officers in plain clothes.

The following day he pleaded guilty to one count of theft at Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court and was jailed for thirty-six weeks.

Rabah was spotted by BTP’s plain clothes officers walking around the station searching for an opportunity.

CCTV footage captured the moment he entered Kineya Mugimaru restaurant and stood behind a man and woman having dinner as officers watched his every move.

Seconds later he bent down and carefully took the man’s rucksack before leaving the restaurant.

The officers leapt into action, immediately arresting Rabah for the brazen theft and handing the rucksack back to the victim.

BTP Sergeant James Ashby said: “Rabah roamed St. Pancras station looking for any opportunity to steal, but he was completely unaware that our eagle-eyed officers were attuned to his plan.

As shown in the CCTV footage, it’s no coincidence that we were able to strike the moment Rabah committed his crime.

Thankfully he is now behind bars, and the victim was immediately reunited with his bag which contained around £600 worth of his possessions.

Our officers are in key locations on the rail network every day in plain clothes, so even if you don’t see us, we are there keeping you and your belongings safe.

Just The Ticket: Crack And Heroin Dealer Caught Getting Off Train

A drug dealer, caught during a ticket check at West Croydon station, is starting a prison sentence of five years and eight months.

Jerome Alexander Simpson-O’Conner, 31, of Howson Road, Lewisham, pleaded guilty to
two counts of possession, with Intent to supply, Class A drugs.

On October 2, last year British Transport Police County Lines Taskforce officers were at the station with the Metropolitan Police and Surrey Police as part of an operation targeting drugs, weapons and robbery.

At around 4.15pm, Simpson-O’Conner got off a train and was trying to leave the station.

He was stopped because of a ticket issue and after speaking to him, officers had grounds to search him.

Simpson-O’Conner became increasingly hostile and tried to run away from officers, but was quickly caught and detained.

During the struggle he discarded a ball of Class A drugs and when officers searched him two mobile phones were found.

While searching an address Simpson-O’Conner said he lived at, officers found a tenancy agreement for a second address in his own name.

When searching this address, they found more Class A drugs, including crack cocaine and heroin concealed in a shoe, weighing scales, a lock knife and five further mobile phones, one of which was advertising drugs for sale.

In total nearly 15 grams of crack cocaine and just over 12 grams of heroin were recovered.

Sergeant Julian Mason from BTP’s County Lines Taskforce oversaw the investigation.

He said: “Simpson-O’Conner tried to frustrate us at each step, first by attempting to escape, answering no comment in interview, and distancing himself from his actual address, but officers worked tenaciously with partners including the CPS and that has led to his significant sentence.

The supply of Class A drugs is inextricably linked to violence and misery in communities, including the exploitation of vulnerable people.

I hope his time behind bars allows Simpson-O’Conner to think about his actions.

I also would like to take this opportunity to highlight the exceptional work of the officers and staff and partner agencies involved in the investigation.”

Druggie On Train Caught With Bizarre Converted Staple Gun Firearm

A drug-user, whose converted staple gun firearm was found in his suitcase after an off-duty cop spotted him getting high on a train, has been locked up.

Jamie Young, 45, recorded himself test-firing the weapon in a field and posing for self-portrait photo with the potentially-deadly firearm.

Young, of Selbourne Close, New Barn, Longfield, Kent was seen by the off-duty Metropolitan Police officer on the evening of March 1, 2024 consuming drugs as the train travelled through Hertfordshire.

He was removed from the service at St Albans City station and was searched.

Inside a pocket of Young’s suitcase was the staple gun that appeared to have been converted into a firearm.

He was arrested and the suspected firearm was seized, along with two phones and a small amount of crack cocaine found on him.

The weapon was tested by specialists and it was classified as a viable firearm equipped with a barrel to fire ammunition.

Analysis of his mobile phones uncovered further evidence connecting Young to the homemade gun, including a video of him test firing it in a field as well as a self-portrait photo with the weapon.

In his police interview, Young claimed the firearm was placed in the suitcase a few months before his trip and he wasn’t aware it was still inside until police officers pulled it out.

British Transport Police Detective Constable Agata Barker said: “Thanks to the sharp actions of the off-duty officer travelling on the train that day, a lethal weapon has been removed from criminal circulation.

Only Jamie Young knows what he planned to do with his homemade gun, but if it was used against someone it could have resulted in fatal consequences.

From material found on his phones it’s clear he was enamoured with his creation and now, following our investigation, he has a long stint behind bars to rethink his interests.

"Anyone carrying weapons on the railway should know that we will find them, and we will ensure they face justice."

Sex Pest Strikes On Surrey Train

A railway creep, who engaged a young woman in conversation by pretending not to know how to enter the ticket barrier before molesting her on the train, has been locked-up.

Hawre Mohamed, 27, of Bonehurst Road, Horley, Surrey is starting an eight-month sentence, following a British Transport Police (BTP) investigation.

He struck onboard the train as it travelled between Horley and Redhill.

Croydon Magistrates' Court also ordered him to sign the sex offenders register for ten years after he was convicted of one count of sexual assault.

The court heard how at around 8.30pm on Monday, September 22 last year, Mohamed was at Horley railway station when he approached the 20 year-old, asking how to get through the ticket barrier.

He boarded the same train as the woman and followed her through the carriage.

Despite there being other empty seats, he opted to sit with the woman against her wishes.

He then engaged her in unwanted conversation, before touching her inappropriately and attempting to kiss her, ignoring repeated requests to leave her alone.

He also suggested she should go back with him and asked her how old she was, stating he "doesn't go for below 18”.

The young woman moved away from him and disembarked at Redhill station, where she reported Mohamed’s actions to station staff and BTP.

Officers were on patrol in East Croydon just days later when they spotted Mohamed, who was wearing the same jacket as the day he sexually assaulted the woman.

He was swiftly arrested and taken into custody.

BTP Detective Constable Geraldine Devaney said: "Mohamed is a sexual predator who preyed on a woman travelling alone and wouldn’t take no for an answer.

“His behaviour that day was simply vile.

"Thanks to the courage and support of the victim, we have been able to put him before the courts and behind bars.

“If you experience or witness a sexual offence on-board a train or at a station, I urge you to report it to us by texting 61016. We take all reports seriously and can respond immediately to trace sexual offenders like Mohamed and bring them to justice."

Bitter Speed No Sympathy: Judge's Driving Ban For Verve Rocker

Rock star Richard Ashcroft was banned from driving for six months today by a judge who criticised him for ignoring three previous speeding offences.

The 55 year-old former Verve frontman did not appear at Lavender Hill Magistrates’ Court, where he pleaded guilty by post to speeding in his eight year-old green four litre Mercedes-Benz AMG V8, which sold for approximately £145,000 new.

The court heard on February 19, last year he exceeded the 40mph limit on an elevated section of the M4 motorway between the Grand Union Canal and Claypools Avenue, Brentford, when caught on camera at 48mph at 11.38pm.

Wigan-born Ashcroft, who lives in a £10m house overlooking Richmond Green, Richmond-upon-Thames was represented by Conall Bailie, instructed by Freeman & Co Solicitors, the law firm of ‘Mr Loophole’ Nick Freeman.

“Mr Ashcroft will not be in attendance and through me he apologises to the court. He had a pre-arranged commitment that he could not break.”

Prosecutor Laura-Ann Harding told the short hearing Ashcroft was recorded at 48mph just before midnight and already has nine penalty points on his driving licence.

Those are for three speeding offences on December 16, 2022; July 5, 2023 and October 21, 2024.

Today’s three penalty points for a fourth speeding offence trigger an automatic six-month ban for the award-winning musician, who was the support act for the Oasis Live ’25 reunion tour.

District Judge Daniel Benjamin announced: “On February 19 last year Mr Ashcroft drove his vehicle on the M4 not only at the speed limit, but at the speed limit, plus one fifth of it at 48mph.

“The speed limit had no doubt been set to ensure the safety of all road users at the time and Mr Ashcroft, in speeding, put not only himself, but others road users at greater risk of harm.”

He fined Ashcroft £1,875, plus £130 costs and ordered him to pay a £750 victim surcharge by the end of the month.

“He has put no information before the court concerning his means apart from indicating he can pay the statutory maximum.”

Earlier in the hearing the judge asked Mr Bailie: “How does he make ends meet?”

“He has clearly had penalty points imposed previously,” added Judge Benjamin, again repeating the dates of those offences.

“He has a total of twelve penalty points and is liable for the totting-up disqualification.

“The purpose of the penalty points disqualification provision is to enable a person after one offence to change and after a second offence change and after a third offence change and Mr Ashcroft has reached four offences without showing any intention to abide by the speed limit.

“Should Mr Ashcroft drive on the road within the next six months from now he may well be liable to the punishment of imprisonment.”

Fortunately for Ashcroft two further speeding offences, brought by Thames Valley Police were dropped.

These were for speeding twice on March 6, last year while driving a new orange £55,000 three litre Ford Ranger Raptor V6.

He had been prosecuted for exceeding the 70mph limit on the westbound M4 motorway near Slough, Berkshire, while travelling at 84mph.

On the same day, again on the westbound M4 he allegedly exceeded the temporary 50mph limit near Burghfield, Reading, while travelling at 57mph.

Ms Harding told the court those two charges were being withdrawn.

Father-of-two Ashcroft, married to musician Kate Radley, former keyboardist of Spiritualised, fronted the Verve from 1990 as the sole singer, songwriter and rhythm guitarist until they disbanded in 1999, reforming again between 2007 and 2009.

Hit’s include the international smash ‘Bitter Sweet Symphony’ and ‘Lucky Man’.

His subsequent successful solo career saw Ashcroft release six top-three UK albums.

He is a two-time Ivor Novello award-winner for songwriting and Brit award-winner for Best Group (Verve) and album ‘Urban Hymns’.
